The short answer
Dental implants work well for seniors. There’s no upper age limit: what matters is your general health, your gums and the bone in your jaw. Many people in their seventies and eighties have implants, often to hold a loose denture firmly in place.
Are dental implants safe for older adults?
Yes, for most people. Studies of implants in older adults show success close to that in younger patients. Before recommending implants, Dr. Ibrahim Sayeed checks the things that matter more than age:
- your medical conditions and medicines, including blood thinners and bone medicines
- diabetes, which should be well controlled
- smoking, which slows healing
- gum health and whether you can clean around implants
- the height and width of your jawbone on a 3D scan
What if most or all of my teeth are missing?
| Option | What it is |
|---|---|
| Implant-retained denture | Two to four implants that a denture clicks onto, so it doesn’t slip |
| Fixed full arch | Four or more implants holding a set of teeth that stays in and is only removed by the dentist |
| Implant bridge | Two implants supporting several teeth in a row |
Our page on replacing missing teeth compares implants with bridges and dentures.
Can I get implants after years of wearing dentures?
Often, yes. Without teeth, the jawbone slowly shrinks, so long-term denture wearers sometimes have less bone. A 3D CBCT scan shows exactly how much is there. If it’s thin, a bone graft or a different implant position can still make implants possible. Holding a lower denture on two implants is one of the most common ways to make it comfortable again.
Does Medicare cover dental implants?
Original Medicare doesn’t cover dental implants. Some Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits, which may pay part of the cost, so check your plan’s dental section. Kingston Smiles doesn’t participate with Medicare or Medicare Advantage dental plans. We can explain your options, including payment plans through CareCredit and Cherry.
What does implant treatment cost for an older adult?
The cost doesn’t depend on age. It depends on how many teeth are replaced, whether you need a bone graft, and what goes on top. Read how much dental implants cost, or what full mouth implants cost if you’re replacing a whole arch. You get an itemized estimate after your exam and scan.
Questions from older patients
Is implant surgery hard on older people?
Placing one or two implants is usually done with local numbing in the chair. Most people feel sore for a few days.
Can I have implants if I take blood thinners?
Often, yes. Dr. Sayeed plans around your medicines and may speak with your doctor first.
Can I keep wearing my denture during treatment?
Usually, yes. It’s adjusted so it doesn’t press on the implants while they heal.
