The short answer

Most people feel like themselves within about a week of implant surgery. The implant then takes three to nine months to fuse with the jawbone before the final tooth is fitted. Soreness and swelling for the first few days are normal.

How long does dental implant recovery take?

  • The first two or three days: rest, use ice on the cheek, and expect some swelling, soreness and light bleeding.
  • The first week: discomfort fades and most people are back to normal routines.
  • About two weeks: the gum has settled and any stitches have dissolved or been removed.
  • Three to nine months: the implant fuses with the bone. You may wear a temporary tooth meanwhile.
  • Then: the final crown, bridge or denture is attached.

If you had a bone graft first, read bone grafts after an extraction for that healing time.

How much pain and swelling is normal after implant surgery?

Swelling of the gum and face, bruising, soreness and minor bleeding are normal for a few days, and over-the-counter or prescribed pain relief and ice usually control it. Take any medicine exactly as prescribed. Call us if pain or swelling gets worse instead of better after the first few days, if you have a fever or pus, or if the implant feels loose.

What can you eat after dental implant surgery?

Soft, cool or lukewarm food at first: yogurt, smoothies, eggs, mashed potatoes, soup that has cooled, oatmeal and fish. Chew on the other side. Leave chips, popcorn, nuts and other hard or crunchy food until Dr. Ibrahim Sayeed says the implant is ready for it.

When can you smoke, drink alcohol or exercise after an implant?

Don’t smoke or vape while the implant heals, and ideally stop for good: across many studies, implants in smokers failed about twice as often, with more infections. Avoid hard exercise for the first days, and alcohol while the site is healing. If you also had a bone graft, avoid alcohol for at least two weeks. Follow the instructions you’re given for your own treatment.

How do you look after the implant while it heals?

  • Keep the area clean with gentle brushing and the rinses you’re given.
  • Don’t poke the site with your tongue or fingers.
  • Wear any temporary tooth as advised and avoid biting hard on it.
  • Keep your follow-up visits, so the implant can be checked as it fuses.

Once the final tooth is on, clean around it daily with an interdental brush or floss, keep regular checkups, and don’t chew ice or hard candy.

Implant recovery questions

Can I go back to work the day after implant surgery?

Many people do if their job isn’t physical. Plan more time off after several implants or a bone graft.

What helps an implant heal faster?

Not smoking, soft nourishing food, keeping the area clean and keeping your follow-up visits.

Does a 3D-guided implant change recovery?

The guide places the implant exactly where it was planned on your scan. Recovery still follows the same steps.
