The short answer

The cost of a dental crown depends on the material, which tooth it’s on, and whether the tooth needs work first, such as a root canal or a core build-up. Most dental plans pay part of a crown as major care. At Kingston Smiles you get a written, itemized estimate after the exam, so you know the full cost before treatment starts.

Why does one crown cost more than another?

FactorWhat it means for the cost
MaterialZirconia and porcelain look natural; metal or gold is used less often. Each has a different lab fee.
ToothFront teeth need careful shade matching; back teeth need strength for chewing.
Prep workA core build-up, a root canal or gum treatment first adds to the total.
VisitsCrowns here are made by a local dental lab: two visits, with a temporary crown in between.

How much does a crown cost without insurance?

Without insurance you pay the practice fee for the crown and any work the tooth needs first. Ask for a written estimate that lists each item. If you want to spread the cost, CareCredit and Cherry offer payment plans.

Does dental insurance cover crowns?

Most plans treat a crown as major care and pay a share of it after your deductible, often after a waiting period. Plans usually cover a crown when it’s needed to protect a tooth, not for looks alone, and most only pay to replace a crown after a set number of years. We work with CSEA and Kingston Trust Fund plans and most PPO plans, and check your benefits before you commit. Read what dental insurance usually covers.

Are low-price crown ads the full price?

Not always. An advertised crown price often covers the crown only. Before you book, ask whether the price includes:

  • the exam and X-rays
  • a core build-up if the tooth needs one
  • the temporary crown
  • the lab and the material you want
  • follow-up visits if the bite needs adjusting

A crown that fits well and lasts saves money over time. A cheaper crown that leaks or breaks early usually costs more in the end.

Is a crown worth the cost?

A crown protects a weak or broken tooth from splitting, which can otherwise mean an extraction and a replacement tooth. With good care a crown can last many years. If a large filling is enough, Dr. Ibrahim Sayeed will say so.

Dental crown cost questions

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Usually on back teeth, yes, because the tooth becomes more brittle. Front teeth sometimes only need a filling.

Why do I need a build-up before my crown?

If a lot of the tooth is missing, a build-up gives the crown something solid to hold on to.

Can I get an estimate before I decide?

Yes. After the exam and X-rays, you get a written estimate before any treatment starts.
